Design & Technology

Intent:

In Design and Technology, we intend to provide all children with a broad and balanced curriculum which prepares them for life beyond primary education. We aim to encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. During Design and Technology, we teach children the language skills they will need to be effective communicators. We intend our children to be critical thinkers, forward planners and effective problem solvers.

Implementation:

  • To develop imaginative thinking in children and to enable them to talk about what they like and dislike when designing and making.
  • Enable children to talk about how things work, and to draw and model their ideas.
  • Children learn through Cross-curricular projects to give meaning and purpose.
  • To encourage children to select appropriate tools and techniques for making a product, whilst following safe procedures.
  • Taught to use a range of tools across KS1 and KS2.
  • Technical skills are embedded within each unit and are built on progressively.
  • Explore attitudes towards the made world and how we live and work within it.
  • Develop an understanding of technological processes, products, and their manufacture, and their contribution to our society.
  • To foster enjoyment, satisfaction and purpose in designing and making.
  • To teach our children to be able to work as capable individuals and as part of a valuable, productive team.
