Geography

Intent:

At Somerset Bridge Primary School, we intend to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and our role in sustaining it; to promote the children's interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth's key physical and human processes.

The children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. The geography curriculum enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas. Geography is an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills.

Implementation:

The Geography programme of study provided by the National Curriculum has been broken down to ensure both progression and coverage across Key Stage 1 and 2.

The teaching of this subject will provide learners with:

  • A geography progression of skills that is organised into four main themes: Geographical Enquiry; Physical Geography; Human Geography; Geographical Knowledge;
  • Exciting topics including links to other areas of the curriculum with a strong focus on understanding prior learning in order to build and secure knowledge, skills and understanding to ensure progression from EYFS – Y6;
  • Fieldwork allowing pupils to explore their local area;
  • A knowledge organiser which outlines knowledge and vocabulary all children must master and apply in lessons;
  • Use of Kahoot quizzes to support learners’ ability to block learning and increase space in the working memory;
  • A well-developed knowledge of their local environment through visits and studies so that they know what makes our local area the place that it is and how it fits into the wider world. Visits include: a walk to Somerset Bridge and exploring the school grounds.
  • The opportunity to engage with a range of geographical resources in lessons such as: maps, globes, photographs, compasses and anenometers;
  • Use of Digimaps to or annotate a map online by selecting an appropriate base map, adding annotations and customising the content, use measurement and query tools to learn more about any study area;
  • Opportunities for educational visits to selected sites both local and further afield, such as Kilve Beach and Lydford Gorge. This will allow learners to apply geographical skills in a range of environments and deepen their understanding of physical and human processes.
