Although we know that the age limit for Whatsapp is 16, we are aware that many of our youngsters have access to this social media platform. The NSPCC have released an article about how parents can ensure they are up-to-date with the pros and cons of their children using such apps. This term, the children in Reception have been learning about materials. Each week, we are looking at a different type of material. Our first week was spent looking at paper. We have been exploring paper and finding out different ways that we can change it. 

We have rolled it, curled it, folded it, cut it and twisted it. 

We made lots of different pictures using these techniques. We then used all of these techniques to make our own paper sculpture. 

 

 

 

On the 9^th January, the children from Eco Club worked with the Community Ranger to plant a variety of fruit and nut trees in the Wilstock and Stockmoor Country Park.  The children worked in pairs to dig holes, plant a tree and cover the hole with bark.  These trees will help form an orchard that can be enjoyed by the local community.

Somerset Bridge KS2 Choir has made an excellent start. They are beginning to make a beautiful sound under the fantastic direction of Peter Selby. 

We have begun by learning 'Do, Re, Mi' from 'The Sound of Music' and 'When I Grow Up' from Matilda.  

One of the trickiest things is learning to stand as a member of the choir; feet shoulder width apart and arms by your side!

 

Fire Service Visit:

We have been fortunate to welcome in Simon from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service this month to lead one of our whole school assemblies and to deliver workshops to Years 2 and 5.  In the assembly, he talked about the role that the fire service play, when it is suitable to call for the fire brigade and reminded all the children to remind their adults at home to test their fire and smoke detectors once a month.

Blue Influencers

Our Y6 Blue Influencers group have been spending their Tuesday afternoons working alongside Thibaud from the Somerset Wildlife Project to develop some designs to improve our school’s water environment- watch this space to here more about their exciting plans!

Coming Up:

Later this half-term we will be welcoming, in Solveig from “Live Naturally” to host healthy eating workshops in school. In Years 3 to 6 the children will be tasting a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables and will also have the opportunity to try some freshly cooked fish. In Reception, Years 1 and 2, we will be inviting parents in to join bread-making workshops too, with Mrs Tweedie’s and Mrs Elkington's Reception Classes having already enjoyed their bread making sessions.
